If you’re reading this article, then I applaud you! This means that you will be trying to convince your wife to let your buy a bike rather than to purchase one. In my quest to communicate better with my wife, I searched the same question on Google. A lot of articles suggested that you just buy one and tell her later. This is not cool.

So, I did some research, and *gasp* actually talked to my wife about it. Here are some suggestions to convince your wife buying a motorcycle is a good idea.  These tips are based on personal experience and have proven to be effective. I’m now the proud owner of a 1969 Triumph TR25W (and hopefully another bike here shortly).

First of all, don’t dismiss your wife’s worries as nonsense.  She probably has legitimate concerns about cost, safety, or other things, and I’ll try to address those issues in this article.  These were my wife’s concerns.

It is important to openly discuss your concerns with your wife if you want them to be open to the idea of talking.  Here are some of my main concerns, which I shared with my wife. Hopefully my experience will help you to find your way forward.

Motorcycles Get Great Gas Mileage

The motorcycles have a better gas mileage than many commuter cars. In fact, they get twice as many miles per gallon.  Most street bikes get between 30 and 60 miles per gallon, and that goes for a lot of the older bikes as well. My old Yamaha XS850 got about 45 MPG.

If you are planning on using this as a commuter vehicle then here’s a cost savings example for you. Most people can ride for about 36 weeks. Then the weather happens.  If you drive about 20 miles one way to work every day and ride a motorcycle that gets 45 mpg instead of your car that gets about 25, then you’ll save around $40 per month!

Motorcycle insurance is very affordable

Most people believe that insurance for motorcycles is too expensive. Many first time owners don’t realize how much cheaper motorcycle insurance costs per month as compared to car insurance.  My motorcycle insurance costs $17 per month, my 1969 Triumph is $17 and my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee auto coverage is $62. Each one is approximately $6,000.

Your wife may be concerned about insurance costs.  You might be able to contact multiple insurance agencies to get free estimates for the bike you want. All of this depends on your motorcycle driving skills. If you’ve already caused one or more accidents previously, you might be out of luck on this one.

If you’ve received an insurance quote that is high, see my article here that may help shed some light as to why it’s high and ways you can bring it down.

Low Maintenance Cost

A motorcycle’s maintenance is much easier, simpler, and more cost-effective than a car.  Major repairs on a bicycle are much less expensive than those on a car. Most repairs can be completed in your garage or carport on a Saturday.

YouTube and the internet are great resources for learning how to fix most problems. If you’re not a DIYer with motorcycle maintenance, now would be a great time to start because it’ll bring your costs down even more.

Your Happiness Level

The biggest reason I started restoring motorcycles is because I’m happy when I’m turning a wrench and working on something.  It was difficult to decide between restoring an old motorcycle or an antique car. I decided to go with the motorcycle as it was easier.

There aren’t that many parts and systems that are near as complicated as full size vehicles. Follow the steps that I have outlined in other posts to see how I restored gorgeous motorcycles for only $500.  A classic car cannot be restored for less than $3-$5,000!

So if you’re itching to fix something then start with a motorcycle! A motorcycle is much cheaper than a car. Maybe you can talk with your wife about buying a fixer upper motorcycle rather than a brand-new one. This will help you save a lot of money.

If the mechanical part really isn’t your thing, you can still try to bring up with your wife how happy you’d be to get a motorcycle. A motorcycle is more than a vehicle. “thing,” it has a lot to do with the sense of freedom you feel while riding it that doesn’t really compare to anything else.

Compromise Your Riding Rules

In the last few years, my wife and me have been much more comfortable in a marriage that has been based on compromise.  She likes going on trips and hanging out with friends while I’d rather hang out in the garage and work on my projects.  While neither one of us is wrong, we need to be clear about our differences so we can both understand what time we each have for each activity.

Here are some of the compromises I made when buying a motorcycle for my wife.  Her primary concerns were safety and cost. To address her safety concern, she promised me that I would not ride my bicycle on the highway/freeway, and that I would never leave home without a helmet.

Sometimes it feels like a hassle to ride around my neighborhood at 15 MPH with a helmet, but it was important to her so she does it. And to make sure I wasn’t tempted to ride on the freeway I picked an old bike that looked beautiful but wasn’t quite able to travel at highway speeds.

Think of ways that you might be able to help others. To make your partner feel safer on the roads, compromise your riding rules.

Let Her Spend As Much As You Do

Find other compromises that you and your spouse can reach. This will make them realize how important you are to each other. Offer to go dancing lessons with them.

You’ll have to adapt it to your situation but the principle remains the same, you have to give up something you’re comfortable with in order for the other person to be willing to also take a step forward.  These are just a few more ideas on how to compromise.

Perhaps the most important trick to compromise is to allow your spouse to spend as much time on her hobbies as you would on yours.  My wife always gets $500 for me to fix up an old project bike. I also make sure she has $500 to go on a trip, or to do whatever else I choose with the money.

Your hobbies may be as strange to her as yours. Try to give money to each other in order for the fairness to continue.

If money is tight and you don’t have the slew of cash to produce such a compromise, then state that you are willing to have this be your Christmas present, birthday present, etc. For the next year, you can do all of the above. Another option is to agree on your partner choosing the next big purchase.

To show her how serious you are, sell some of your belongings

Sell some of your personal items to raise money for a motorcycle.  This will not only benefit you financially but also help the environment. But it will also demonstrate to your wife how willing you are to sacrifice for this motorcycle.  This will especially be effective if you sell something that’s quite valuable to you.

Perhaps you could sell your gaming console or laptop, or downgrade your phone.  My wife had financial concerns when I bought a motorcycle for recreational purposes a few years back. I decided to sell my Play Station, which helped pay for a significant portion of my motorcycle. It also showed my wife just how serious I was about purchasing a motorcycle.

Your wife must remember that by agreeing to let you ride a bike, she is also sacrificing her nerves and worries. Compromise, compromise, compromise!

Another cost related point of compromise is making a strict budget with your spouse of how much you’re going to spend on the project if you plan to do any customizing. But you’ll actually need to stick to it.  If you keep going over budget every month, the motorcycle will quickly become a point of contention in your relationship. A relationship that is fraught with tension is better than a piece of machinery.

You can decide that you will spend $50 each month together and then look for small ways to make extra cash. Don’t hesitate to sell the old parts of your bike, or any junk you have around the house.

Compromise is about sticking to your word.  Don’t lie about how much you’re going to spend. You can have fun together by being honest about how much you’re spending.  Riding is something my wife and I love to do together, and occasionally I can even get her out in the garage to work on it with me, but that’s only because I’ve made those compromises and then kept them.

Increase your mechanical skills

Your learning curve will be steep when you start a new project.  As soon as you start understanding how certain things work you’ll get excited about it and want to figure out more, and knowing how things work is just going to make you that much safer of a rider.

An old project motorcycle can be a great way for you to improve your mechanical skills. Read my article about what to look out for when purchasing a project bike.  It’s empowering and thrilling to be able work with your hands and fix problems yourself.  People used to need to go to libraries or mechanic shops to read manuals in order to figure out how things worked.

Today’s information-driven world offers an infinite supply of information., so there really is no reason to ever say that you can’t fix something yourself, because you can! You can do it if I can.

Once you start to do small projects on your motorcycle you’ll start to have thoughts like, “ Oh, that’s what that one part on my car does” because a motorcycle and a car have basic components that are similar, they’re just much easier to get to and work on with a motorcycle.

After owning a motorcycle for a while you’ll be able to jump in and fix certain things on your cars as well, You will be able to save tons of dollars.. That’s what happened to me, after owning a motorcycle for a while, I learned how similar parts on my car worked and then I didn’t feel so overwhelmed working on my car. Enhance Qualities That Are Suitable for Employment

One unexpected benefit to owning and fixing motorcycles, which I discovered recently, is how attractive a skill like this one. “classic motorcycle restoration” Potential employers may find it useful to include a resume.

Recently, I was interviewing for positions in the mechanical engineering field with various companies across the country. I was surprised by how eager the interviewers were to discuss my motorcycles rather than academic projects.  They didn’t like motorcycles but rather because my industry is highly dependent on me having a working knowledge of mechanical parts.

My brother-in-law is also an attorney and was the one who introduced me to cafe racers many years ago.  He also wrote “classic motorcycle restoration” On his application to law firms, he mentioned it several times during interviews as people thought it was cool.

You’ll Look Pretty Dang Attractive!

I don’t need to preach to you about how cool it is to ride a motorcycle. You’re likely to feel great on your motorcycle.

My first date was when I took my wife on a motorcycle ride through our college campus.  Being able to repair a motorcycle is a very appealing skill to many people. It certainly helped me win my wife over.  Being able to fix things yourself is very appealing.

Suggest to your wife to let you take her for a motorcycle ride on a friend’s motorcycle or a rented one. This may give her the confidence that you’re suitable to own a machine like this. And who knows, maybe she’ll love the ride!

Motorcycles are good emergency vehicles

My wife actually brought up this point a while ago and at first I didn’t understand.  I asked her to elaborate and was pretty surprised by her thought out response (she’s now a full on motorcycle convert).

Our move to Mississippi was during hurricane season. It was quite daunting to think of how we would have to deal with such an element.  My wife mentioned that right before hurricanes come a lot of people leave at the same time if there’s not a lot of notice, so traffic backs up quickly and it’s hard to get out of town, or even around town for that matter.

These situations call for the use of motorcycles as a mode of transportation. It could make the difference between life or death if you can zip past cars and get where you need.

You’ll Be Safe From an Electrical Grid Attack

She also mentioned the fact that the military stated that an attack on the United States’ electrical grid is the most likely. Bombs can be used to destroy all of the circuitry within a short distance.  But most old motorcycles don’t have computers! There is nothing to eat, so you can travel as if nothing has ever happened.

You might think this is a bit extreme and that I’m one of those doomsdayers. It’s possible that many people believe this won’t happen. That would be wonderful.  If it does, then you have a means of transport in an awful situation. You can also get a motorcycle if it does not.

So whatever your spouse’s concerns are with letting you get a motorcycle just be kind and persistent.  Sometimes they may take some time to accept you. This article can be used to relate to both men and women. Be open to compromise and be flexible.
