Selling as many old parts as you can is one of the best ways of recovering some of the costs of rebuilding or restoring a motorcycle.  I’ve done this many times.  In fact, I’ve actually rebuilt a Honda CB750. It came with many extras so I sold them all for more than what I paid for the motorcycle.

How can you sell parts for a motorcycle? Online platforms such as eBay, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are the best ways to sell parts for your motorcycle.  It’s important to clean and prep your parts appropriately. You’ll also need to make sure you take several pictures at different angles.

Over the years, I’ve sold hundreds of motorcycle parts and learned how to quickly sell them for a profit.  Keep reading below to learn where to sell them, how to prep them, how to take good pictures, and what to expect when you’re selling parts online.

The Best Websites to Sell Your Motorcycle Parts

Whether you’re trying to find creative ways to fund certain fixes or upgrades on your motorcycle or your partner is nagging at you to get rid of some of your stuff, selling some of those extra parts from your motorcycle that you don’t need any more is an excellent place to start.

My personal experience is that eBay is the best online marketplace to sell new and used parts for motorcycles. eBay has the largest number of users in the world and is easy to use. This makes it my top choice. They charge 9% on the selling price of up to $50 USD.  It is also the best place to find online scammers as they are very few.

A word for wise don’t sell really large or heavy items on eBay because the seller pays the shipping cost. You should only sell items on eBay when you are able to make a profit after shipping.  Use the local listings below for large or heavy items.

Facebook Marketplace is now my second favorite place to buy parts locally. Marketplace was something that I discovered recently.  I’ve posted a few things for sale and have had fairly good luck with selling the parts.  It is very easy to use and I have never had to deal directly with any scammers on Marketplace.

Something I don’t like about Marketplace is that it allows
all the flaky people on Facebook to message you and say things like, “I’ll be
by on Tuesday to pick up the item” and then they never show.  It’s very frustrating to deal with people
Facebook offers many such features.

Craigslist is another great place to sell extra parts for your motorcycle. But it is only effective as a selling platform for motorcycle parts if you’re willing to deal with scammers sending you text messages. It’s incredibly easy to spot scammers though, so I don’t mind dealing with it.  I’ll give a list of things to look out for below in the section What to Expect from Buyers

CycleTrader is another platfrom, which I have not personally used but has been around for quite some time. I’ve sold actual motorcycles on there with no problems, but I’ve never sold parts on CycleTrader.  Although there isn’t nearly as much traffic to the CycleTrader parts section than on eBay Motors (which I prefer), you may be able to sell some parts on this platform depending on your location.

How to prepare parts for selling

Remember this when you are selling motorcycle parts: they don’t have to look perfect, they just have to look better than the other person you’re competing with. Sometimes it amazes me how little effort people put into selling motorcycle parts.

It is important to properly clean your equipment if you plan to sell it.  A used carburetor can sometimes be sold for twice the price by just cleaning it with soap and carb cleaner. You should always present your parts in the best possible condition to attract more attention.

This should be simple but some people don’t get it.  If it’s stainless steel or chrome then use steel wool and soap to shine the metal.  If it’s greasy then clean it all off with a pressure washer.  Pressure washers are very handy when you need to clean motorcycle parts, especially if there’s grease and caked on dirt involved. Pressurewashr.com is an excellent place to look if you’re in the market and their article “The Best Pressure Washers” This article (link to article), is a great resource to help you choose the right pressure washer for your needs.

You can also double or triple your earnings by spray painting the parts before you sell them. It is worth doing whatever you can to attract potential buyers. Unless of course the thing you’re selling is really big and would take tons of time to paint.

Before you list your parts, take a look at your competitors and compare them to see which parts are available.  When you find the few parts that most closely resemble the quality of what you’re selling then list yours for slightly cheaper.  Even if it’s only a few dollars cheaper, people will be automatically drawn to your listing over the other person’s.

Take Good Pictures

I hate poor quality photos in classifieds listings.  Almost everyone owns a decent smartphone these days, and if you don’t then one of your friends does.  When you are ready to list your items, make sure they are in a well-lit place so that it is easy to take photos.

To give buyers a better idea of the quality of the item, take close-up photos from all angles. And don’t Copy and paste the manufacturer images of the item you find in a search engine.  It will be more attractive to people if you take your own photos.

Avoid dark areas, large shadows, cluttered areas and photos taken too far away when taking a picture.  People want to be able to zoom in and look at the quality of the part, so make sure you’re using a decent smartphone or camera.

If you add the photos to the listing, they will look blurry
Take new photos after being pixelated.  It
This only takes a couple of minutes, so be sure to do it again.  Also, don’t have people in your
pictures.  Even if youre not sure,
No one else would want to see your girlfriend.
She holds the part of the motorcycle.  Just
Send pictures of the item.

What to Expect from Buyers

Every online platform comes with its own challenges
With this in mind, when you are ready to sell parts online, remember that there are a few things you need to be aware of.
people can be challenging but it’s worth it since they’re paying you.

Although eBay allows for a smooth transaction, it is not always possible to sell parts quickly. I prefer to post my items on eBay with a Buy It Now price and not an auction price. Just list it for a few dollars less than the competition so you don’t have to deal with people trying to nickel and dime you on the price.

eBay buyers have two days to pay for the item that they win.
and if they still don’t pay then you can relist it.  This has happened only twice in my life.
10 years of eBay experience.  Only sell
items to people in the United States so I don’t have to deal with shipping
It makes it so much easier to ship items internationally.

Be sure to ship the item quickly once someone has paid or else you’ll get bad feedback and less people will buy your items in the future. eBay is my favourite online parts shop. I have sold and bought thousands of dollars of parts there over the years.

Be careful when posting information on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.  I always try to meet people at a large parking lot or store when selling them items so they don’t know where I live. I also don’t let people pay me on PayPal because of some common scams.

If anyone messages you and wants to pay you with a personal check, a cashiers check, or wire you money then you automatically know it’s a scam.  You should stop messaging them back, however legitimate it may sound.

If people send you messages with very poor grammar,
it’s also a scam, don’t waste your time and stop responding to them.  Most scammers originate from developing countries.
English is their second language or third, so their spelling skills will be a challenge.
Very poor.

Selling parts online is easy and you can make a lot of money.  Don’t be scared to do it, I’ve been doing it for over a decade and have had very few problems.
