If you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle or driven a manual car for long enough, you know how clutches can sometimes be used to shift.
The clutch, a small disc on your motorcycle that connects and disconnects engine torque from the transmission, is what you call it. This is what makes smooth riding possible. The clutch, like any other component on a motorcycle can suffer premature wear or even failure.
It is possible to shift gears on a motorcycle with the clutch off, but it is not recommended. The internal components of a motorcycle are damaged if you shift gears without using the clutch. While clutchless shifting may be possible, it can damage the transmission and/or prematurely wear the clutch. This should only ever be done in an emergency.
How can you make the worst type of shift work? What kind of damage will you do? And how do you know when you’ve badly damaged something? Transmissions can be fragile and costly. You should limit wear to transmission components.
Why the Clutch Should Be Always Used
Our goal is to ride safely for as many years as possible. We also want to return home safe and sound. The same attitude applies to the maintenance of our motorcycles.
The transmission is, in fact, one of the most crucial components on a motorcycle. It’s how we get power out of the engine and out to the wheels. Transmissions are made up of gears, rings and other components. The motorcycle’s upshifts and downshifts determine the gear ratios. The transmission then moves to provide a more efficient transfer of power.
With power being output by the engine and input to the transmission, there needs to be a way to connect the output and the input in a way that doesn’t load the engine excessively or transmission too abruptly. The clutch acts as the middleman that makes shifting possible.
The clutch is a large, flat plate made of different types of friction material and placed between the output of crank and the input of the transmission. Its purpose is to enable the output torque to mesh and transfer smoothly to any output ratios.
Because the clutch is sort of the middle man in this order of operations, it’s made of a material that will wear down. This means that the clutch will suffer excessive wear and not the transmission’s gears. It is difficult to repair the transmission. You will probably find it more difficult and expensive to do repairs in your garage.
How can you avoid premature transmission failure? Use your clutch. Before I start talking about how to clutch-less shift, you need to know why you shouldn’t. The clutch wasn’t added to the bike just for the fun of it. The motorcycle clutch serves a purpose and should be used as often as possible.
Why Higher RPM’s Will Cause More Damage Without The Clutch
We will be looking at two conditions. The first is what happens in the transmission when it runs at low rpm and the second is what happens when it runs at high rpm. The tachometer measures rotational speed of motorcycle. When I say low rpm’s, I’m saying that the rotational speed of the motorcycle crank is low, and the load that the engine is under is generally small.
High rpm conditions are when the crankshaft rotates at a very high rate of speed. The engine is therefore working hard to continue revving.
It is best to shift clutch-less when you push the bike into gear while increasing the rpms.. This is because even though the crankshaft is moving very fast, it is still working well.Low torque is applied to the transmission gears.. When you are in low rpm’s, you’ll notice that you won’t be able to put it into another gear, and that’s because the torque from the engine is high.
Although the engine puts out low torque when running at high revs, the engine will still produce enough power to keep the engine going. it’s the speed from the input shaft of the transmission that can cause serious damage to the internals. The greater the difference between the rotating speed of the crankshaft and the rotating speed of the transmission, the more likely it is that you’ll damage something on the inside of the bike while doing a cluth-less shift.
It is not possible to shift in an ideal situation without the clutch. But, it is important to ensure that the crank turns fast enough to decrease the torque coming out of the rear wheels.
Instances When It’s Okay To Not Use The Clutch
Accidents can happen and our motorcycles can be damaged or have their components destroyed. The clutch can also fail. A clutch-less shift is only allowed when the hydraulic actuator or clutch cable is damaged, but the transmission still has a working clutch.
You can’t shift without the clutch unless the clutch is still in good condition. Even though you aren’t using the clutch lever, you still need the friction plate of the clutch to be in place to hold torque of engine against the rotational plate of the transmission.
Or, in other words, If the failure of the clutch is worn or damaged, the clutch-less shifting will not work. The system that disengages and reengages the clutch will still function.
How do you make a clutch-less shift if you absolutely must? Smooth steady movements with little hesitations are key to shifting smoothly without the clutch.
This is a quick overview of the process, You need to ensure that your motorcycle is in the high rev range. When it feels like it needs to shift, let go of the throttle tension and then use your foot to move the transmission into the next gear.
Stop trying to change gears if you hear any grinding, clattering or ringing. Restart the engine and rev it up. This movement should be executed with care. The clutch exists for a reason and should always be used.
How You Know You’ve Caused Damage
What’s the worst that can happen? The worst thing that could happen is a mis-shift to a gear that causes a violent clash of gears and bends, or even breaks, a tooth on a particular gear.
The transmission contains a variety of gears that allow you to select different ratios. Everything inside the transmission, including the gears themselves, is made of metal. They are therefore durable but also susceptible to cracking or scarring from too much heat.
Fluids are used to lubricate the transmission. Lubricant keeps the components cool and spins smoothly. Checking the fluid inside the transmission can help you determine the health of the gears.
Checking transmission fluid isn’t something that is done as often as engine oil, but shouldn’t be a maintenance item that you neglect. You should first check the oil in the transmission if you suspect an internal transmission problem.
Color of the fluid isn’t as important as checkIng to see what is in The fluid. If there are metal fragments inside of the fluid, it’s highly possible that something inside of the transmission has failed and is in need of repair.
Be careful out there and remember that a clutch-less shift shouldn’t just be used to speed up acceleration, but should only be used in emergencies.
